Pronouns: Disjunctive (Stressed) Pronouns

Disjunctive Pronouns are those which pick out a person(s):

euxthem (m) / they

They are used in a number of situations:

  • after prepositions (for, with, without, chez) e.g. veux-tu manger avec moi? = do you want to eat with me
  • as a stand-alone answer, or for emphasis at the beginning of a sentence e.g. Qui est heureux? Moi (or Moi, je suis content) = Who is happy? Me, I am happy.
  • in comparisons e.g. il est plus odorant qu'elle = he is smellier than her
  • after c’est or ce sont e.g. Ce n’est pas lui. Ce sont eux. = It is not him. It is them.

-même can be added to add self (and also to on) i.e.

moi-même myself
toi-même yourself
lui-même himself
elle-même herself
soi-même oneself
nous-même ourselves
vous-même yourselves
eux-même themselves (m)
